Ending fur farming in Europe – the list of invasive species of the EU
Mink farming constitutes 92 per cent of fur farming in Europe. There are two species of minks – the endangered and protected European mink, protected by the Bern convention on conservation of European wildlife and the American mink, imported in Europe for fur farming.
However, the American mink is an invasive species in Europe, competing for food, territory and mating with its nearly extinct European cousin.
In 2015 the EU adopted Regulation 1143/2014 which prohibits the keeping, breeding and growing of invasive species on the territory of The European Union. A special list – the List of Invasive Alien Species of Union Concern was created in 2016 which specified exactly which species are prohibited. Sadly, the American mink was not included in this first edition. However, the list will be updated in the beginning of 2018 and the assessment procedures are currently ongoing. The American mink is one of the species assessed for this second edition of the list.
If the American mink is included in this list, this would mean a ban on all mink farms everywhere in the European Union. Of course, the fur lobby is fighting back stating economical arguments.
A quick review of the situation as well as the possible ways to influence the process are going to be discussed.
