Strength and difficulties of an expanding movement: Italy as a case study
Animal rights are more and more discussed in Italy and the idea is slowly supported by the majority of people in the country, at least theoretically. National media now airs harsh images from investigations and debates on veganism, factory farming and slaughterhouses happen almost weekly on TV, radio and newspapers. As a result the number of vegans, vegetarians and reducetarians is rising, while numbers show a decline in the production of meat and the number of farms.
But this brings with it also a growing conflict: on one side status quo believers strongly defend their habits or businesses and attack vegans/vegetarians, on the other side some vegans with their actions offer the perfect weapon to harm the movement's image and reputation.
The problem is: a growing movement doesn't always come easy. It means also growing difficulties leading or representing it, especially with the rise of social media.
