Computer Security for Activists English talk by Franz Gratzer (Austria)

Franz von Sales: Seminar room, ground floor

In this talk Franz Gratzer will give a practical down-to-earth guide for non-technical activists who want to know what easy and cost-free things they could do to considerably increase their digital workflow security.

Some covered topics:

  • When or how much can we trust our computers?
  • How far can we rely on (social media) internet platforms?
  • Are smart phones trustworthy enough?
  • How to find and memorize strong pass phrases?
  • Why has disc encryption little to do with e-mail encryption?
  • Why we should hold on to older hardware as long as possible.

Gratzer knows from experience with many fellow activists that only easy to do things will become second nature in everyday life. Especially we activists need to adopt practices to protect our data because unconscious security problems can easily bring our important work to a sudden halt. We need to be able to decide consciously what data we share with with whom or with which entity.

In order to help animals we need to take over control and break free from unnecessary digital boundaries and limitations. We should not just assume what everyone does is good enough for people working in opposition to powerful institutions.
